The US government National Security Agency (NSA) created the Information Assurance Methodology (IAM) in 1998 to meet the demand for improved Information Security.  This demand was further brought to the forefront due to the presidential Decision Directive 63 (PDD-63) which required NSA to expand their responsibilities to include direct support for all federal agency classified information systems.  Today, IAM has become the defacto standard method for assessing and then securing Information systems environment.
